The mouse phenogenomics and the good practices regarding the use of mouse models for scientific research
The mouse phenogenomics is currently the key way through modelling of disease in biomedicine. The mouse phenogenomics is crucial to the understanding of mammalian genome, understanding of the mechanisms of pathogenesis, the discovery of new targets and preclinical human therapeutic applications. ICS is a specialist in the generation of genetically modified mice, and clinical characterization in vivo (anatomical, physiological and behavioural phenotypes). It enables innovative research and discovery with the goal of advancing human health through PHENOMIN, French infrastructure for research in biology and health. PHENOMIN is actively involved in the international effort to annotate the genome of mammals, and particularly functional annotation of 20 000 coding genes identified in mice, which actually make up only 1.5% of its genome
PHENOMIN offered an international training of excellence providing engineers, PhDs and researchers with an innovative program focused on best practices in the use of the mouse model for biomedical research; this program also addressed the item of continuing professional education consistent with the new European directive requirement for lab animal protection in experiments.
The school provided a wealth of information on good practices in the use of mouse model (standardized techniques, ethics, regulations, analysis, data and resources ...) to support attendees in their research:
The program consisted of invited speakers' talks, work sessions on selected scientific and/or methods issues, oral sessions of the attendees, poster sessions. The school covered the different fields of mouse phenogenomics, ranging through 5 topics from state-of-the-art mouse genetics, mutagenesis, mouse colony management, phenotyping human diseases and data management (statistical approaches). Importantly, some freely-available resources that link model organism genes to human diseases will be presented to promote a better understanding of the mammalian genome.
Mornings were devoted to seminars whereas afternoons were devoted to "practical sessions" needing the active attendees' participation (poster session, oral communication, work group).
A visit of wine cellars and tasting of regional products has been scheduled as social event during the last evening. It was really funny to hear the English movie translation about the grape growing in the North of Alsace with a strong Alsatian accent.
The target audience consisted of Master's degrees and/or researchers who directly or indirectly use mouse as animal model for scientific research. We have encouraged both industrial and academic researchers, postdocs and PhDs from all Europe to attend this school. The school involved French and European major infrastructures, thought its INFRAFRONTIER partnership.
42 participants from over nine different countries have attended at the school.
One of the aims of the PHENOMIN thematic school was to provide the unique opportunity for PhDs and young postdocs to discuss in details about their research with experts as well as with each other in order to:
The courses were based on scientific international projects dedicating to the annotation of the genome of mammals and mouse phenogenomics. In addition, the scientific, ethical considerations and regulatory issues have been addressed (new European requirements for animal testing). The invited speakers' talks have included seminars (25 or 50 minutes) on specific topics that allowed discussion with the audience (5 or 10 minutes questions & answers). Attendees will be given opportunities for informal chats through lunches and dinners with speakers and experts.
An abstract submission have been required and consisted of recently published or unpublished research or clinical case presentations or new solutions for management/husbandry problems. They were designed for the poster session, allowing attendees to interact for 10 minutes with experts during the first day of the school. Posters have been viewable throughout the school duration to follow discussion with experts.
We performed working sessions in groups to answer scientific or methodological issues from participants (attendees expectations have been declined in the registration form); these assignments have been based on the criticism of recent scientific articles selected by the involved experts and the information obtained from the course/seminars. Speakers and experts had helped attendees to manage their work session. This was also a great opportunity for attendees to share thoughts and to get advice for their own experimental design.

All these topics will also be discussed among participants and scientific experts during poster sessions, working groups or round table that will encourage exchanges.
The school will boost the emergence of new themes and will accentuate interdisciplinary in scientific survey of PhDs and active staff in the field of functional and clinical studies. In this context, the thematic school allows to provide a friendly environment that fosters strong connections between students, young researchers who would never have the opportunity to meet, and so a warm relationship between researchers, and the organizers and stakeholders. The main objective is to strengthen the relationship between doctoral education and scientific research. Bringing together, the school will structure the scientific community using mice as an experimental model around the infrastructure PHENOMIN and many networks in which it participates actively (ROCAD, CELPHEDIA, INFRAFRONTIER, IMPC...).
